George Bailey (James Stewart), who is on the brink of bankruptcy, is about to commit suicide by throwing himself into the river on Christmas Eve. Bailey, who has lived in the same small town since birth, is a dedicated, tolerant, reliable, and helpful person to the town and its people. He has successfully survived the Great Depression and through the real estate and finance company inherited from his father, he has made almost everyone in the town a homeowner.
